Minor chords
\nYou make major chords with the notes and intervals of a major scale. \nUse fingers 1, 3, and 5 to play most chords — certainly major and minor chords. Let’s learn how to build a thirteenth flat ninth piano chord.

To form a seventh ♯5th chord, use the root, 3rd, ♯5th and ♭7th of the major scale. Although it’s not a triad , I still think of the dominant 7th chord as one of the fundamental chords, just because it has such a unique sound. To build a dominant 7th chord, start with a major chord, then add the note 3 half steps above the 5th, which also happens to be one whole step below the chord root – but an octave higher. This is called the minor or dominant 7th interval. And these are easy – just add the 6th note from the major scale to the major or minor chord. That’s the note a whole step above the fifth of the major triad.

Diminished Chords
\nYou may find it easiest to use fingers 1, 2, and 4 for augmented and diminished chords played with the right hand. \nMajor chords are so common that musicians treat them as almost the norm. Augmented chords are formed by a root, a major third and a major third. Diminished chords are formed by a root, a minor third and a minor third. You know now how to build all the possible major chords. As you might have guessed, sharp 11 chords take the 11th and raise it a half step.

The name of the chord starts with the name of the first note, the root. A triad can thus be defined by the first note and the size of the two intervals. But of course, the “pitch distance” or the interval between two keys or notes can be more than 1 semi-tone. On the keyboard, there are white keys which give 7 notes from A to G repeated over and over. To form a chord, you know now that you need to combine at least 3 notes together.
For the right hand, use fingers 1, 2, and 5 for sus2 chords; use fingers 1, 4, and 5 for sus4 chords. For the left hand, use fingers 5, 4, and 1 for sus2 chords; use fingers 5, 2, and 1 for sus4 chords. Another popular type of three-note chord, although it’s technically not a triad, is the suspended chord. The name means “hanging,” and the sound of a suspended chord always leaves you waiting for the next notes or chords.
I rarely use these chords, but I do like to play them occasionally at the end of a song, for the very last chord. In fact, you can find the perfect example of a #11 chord at the end of the classic Vince Guaraldi version of “O Christmas Tree” from the Charlie Brown Christmas Special. Just like 11th and 9th chords, 13th chords mean you should automatically play the 7th, 9th AND 11th tones from the major scale as well. USUALLY, the 11th is left out of a 13th chord, just because it kind of clashes with the other notes.
